The Tyranny of the Happy Path

The happy path is the story we tell in the pull request. It is the screenshot, the green check, the recording where the cursor never hesitates. It is also, statistically, the least interesting thing your program will ever do.

Everything that makes software feel trustworthy happens off the happy path: the timeout that degrades instead of hanging, the form that remembers what you typed, the retry that is idempotent because someone thought about it at 2am. We reward the demo and we ship the coward’s version of the rest. Then we wonder why it feels brittle.
